Embracing the art of slowing down

Hi friends,

Sam here! One of the best perks of working with your long-distance best friend is getting to see each other for work trips and chatting daily. So, when we got the invite to The Soccer Tournament in Cary, NC this year, Meghan and I were so excited! It meant she’d be coming to North Carolina and staying with me for the trip.

As soon as Meghan booked her travel, we jumped into planning mode. We brainstormed how to maximize every minute of her visit to make it productive for work. Our to-do list grew quickly: people to meet, tasks to tackle in person, content to film for social media—you name it. Though Meghan was only going to be here for a couple of days, we were determined to make the most of our time together and get a ton done for work.

Fast forward a couple of weeks, and I was already picking up Meghan from the airport. We immediately hit the ground running with back-to-back meetings, crossing off items from our never-ending to-do list, and reaching out to everyone we planned on seeing for work.

The next morning, we woke up early and headed off to The Soccer Tournament. Meghan, a hardcore soccer player and fan, was thrilled that we scored free tickets this year (thanks, Alex!). In true Meghan fashion, she had meticulously mapped out our itinerary for the tournament to ensure she could see all of her favorite players.

As we navigated The Soccer Tournament, our to-do list kept expanding. We found ourselves wondering, "How can we maximize our time here? Should we shoot videos? Should we work between games?" It's safe to say that Meghan and I can get pretty consumed by work.

Naturally, we added more tasks to our list and initially viewed the tournament as a work opportunity rather than a chance to hang out and have fun. However, as the trip went on, we both managed to take a breather and discovered the beauty in simply enjoying the tournament - as fans.

We found ourselves reassuring each other that it was perfectly fine to simply enjoy the tournament and relish the incredible opportunity to attend for free. And you know what? It is!!

Don't worry—we still managed to cross plenty off our to-do list. However, we also challenged ourselves to be present and savor the moment at the tournament. Sometimes, as women in sports or as entrepreneurs, we forget that it's okay to just enjoy ourselves. Not everything has to revolve around work, and not everything needs to be turned into a work opportunity. After all, our love of sports is why we wanted to work in this industry in the first place.

This is something Meghan and I struggle with almost daily, and we know it's something many of our members struggle with too. But we're here to remind you (and ourselves!) that it's okay to breathe, be in the moment, and not feel pressured to turn every waking minute into a work opportunity. And most importantly we're here to remind you that you're awesome and you belong here.
